The Holy Roman Empire

The Holy Roman Empire was a complex union of provinces in central Europe which began with Charlemagne in 800AD and ended with Napoleon in 1809. It was ruled by an emperor who was elected by powerful princes. Over the centuries, the Emperor lost power until Napoleon abolished it completely.
