Greetings from the Johnson Family! We are a homeschooling family with
five children. We love educating our children at home. We have used
various methods and curricula throughout the years, but a few years
ago I was asked by a friend to read "The Well-Trained Mind"
by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer. Other books have been influential
in our homeschool, but none more so than this book in how we teach
history. It makes wonderful sense to begin the study of history at...
well... the beginning, and to progress through it chronologically.
We follow the authors' advice of putting together history notebooks.
Our children enjoy reading through the "books" that they
have made and looking at the pictures they have drawn and the maps
that they have labeled and colored.
As the primary teacher, I was never satisfied with
the selection of blank maps that I could find. I used internet sources,
shopped at the local teacher supply store and browsed countless
catalogs. Blank, or blackline, maps are nearly always drawn by current
political boundary lines. How could one find a map that encompassed
the area conquered by Alexander the Great, for example? I found
myself scouring historical atlases for the best map and having the
children trace them for their notebooks. The problem... tracing
paper is so thin, the pages were easily torn out of the notebooks
by mistake. The solution... I needed to create my own historical
blackline maps for our homeschool use.
And so, Knowledge Quest was born as our family business.
In seeking advice from Susan Wise Bauer for this project, she asked
if some of our maps could be included in her recently published
book "The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child"
which we are delighted to be a part of. Her book and our maps are
not mutually exclusive of one another, but may be used in conjunction
with one another. They may also be used along side other world history
curricula. Our maps follow a chronological progression of history
and are broken down into four major time periods: The Ancients (5000BC-400AD),
The Middle Ages (400AD-1600AD), The New World (1600AD-1850AD), and
The Modern World (1850AD-Present).
We are now thrilled to be expanding our product line
by carrying wall and book timelines, timeline software, and timeline
figures. We have a new series of books entitled What Really
Happened... which tell the true stories of ordinary individuals
who accomplished extraordinary deeds. We are also publishing
some great world and U.S. geography resources which are sure to take
the boredom out of that subject. We hope that you enjoy
exploring our site.
