Note: In 1849, ships were depart-
ing from the east coast to California
daily. The quickest sea route to the
goldrush included crossing the Isth-
mus of Panama by land. This journey
could be made in 30 days if condi-
tions were favorable. Travelers who
chose to “round the horn”, might not
arrive at the gold fields for six months
or even longer.
