In the 1930′s, both Spain and Portugal saw the emergence of authoritarian and nationalist regimes. Antonio de Oliveira Salazar established his Estado Novo in Portugal in 1933 and in 1936, Francisco Franco started a rebellion against the Spanish government. After three years of civil war, the rebellion proved to be successful.
