The Mongol Empire existed during the 13th and 14th centuries, and was the largest contiguous land empire in human history. Genghis Khan proclaimed himself ruler of all Mongols in 1206. The empire grew rapidly under his rule and continued under the rule of his descendants, who sent out invasions in every direction.

In the centuries following the death of Muhammed, Muslim armies poured out into all of the surrounding kingdoms, controlling the lands from Persia to Spain. With this huge amount of land under their control, the Caliphates allowed Islamic merchants and scholars to travel easily through western Eurasia and western Europe. Mecca became the religious center and pilgrims from all throughout the empire would travel there to worship. They still do.
