Along with other sovereign rulers of England and France, Eleanor of Aquitaine and her son, Richard the Lionhearted, lead the charge during the Crusades and fought the Turkish army for the Holy Land. The Crusades occurred between the years 1095 and 1291.

The Vikings were a seafaring people who raided, traded, explored and settled as far east as Constantinople and the Volga River in Russia and as far west as Iceland, Greenland and even North America during the 8-11th centuries. The Vikings traveled in wooden longships with wide, shallow hulls which allowed them to navigate through rough seas and shallow rivers.

After the division of the Roman Empire into two halves, Western and Eastern, the western half was sacked by Barbarian tribes and obliterated. The eastern half, however, continued to thrive and prosper. The old Roman Empire eventually became known as the Byzantine Empire and was ruled strongly by new leadership, Emperor Justinian the most famous of all.

When the Roman Empire could no longer sustain itself due of its great size and other management problems, Diocletian split the Roman Empire into two halves – Eastern and Western. The Eastern Roman Empire eventually became the Byzantine Empire and was ruled from Constantinople for another 1000 years. The Western Roman Empire fell to the barbarians.
