Jericho, believed to be the oldest city permanently inhabited on earth, is located to the west of the Jordan River in the region of Canaan. Rich in natural resources and fortified naturally by the Dead Sea to its south and the Central Mountains to its west, Jericho was a popular place of trade and the first city conquered by the Israelites, led by Joshua after the Exodus from Egypt.

Abraham’s home town of Ur was first inhabited around 4200-4500 BC.  Once a coastal city near the mouth of the ancient Euphrates River on the Persian Gulf, Ur is now well inland, south of the Euphrates on its right bank, about 10 miles from Nasiriyah, Iraq. Ur was a city-state of Sumer.

Abraham’s Journey Into Canaan /map_center/abrahams-journey-into-canaan/ /map_center/abrahams-journey-into-canaan/#comments Mon, 28 Oct 2013 22:27:13 +0000 KQ Team /map_center/?p=64 Abraham-MC-medium

The city of Harran, in southern Turkey near the border of Syria, is probably the Haran mentioned in the Bible.  Abraham’s father Terah took Abraham and his brother Nahor with him from Ur to Haran following the death of his son, also named Haran (Haran was Abraham’s brother and the father of Lot).  After staying in the city of Haran for some time, the Lord called Abraham to leave the ancient city and to travel south to the land of Canaan, which was to become his inheritance and would be passed on to his descendants, the Children of Israel.
