Before British colonization in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous people groups that spoke over 250 different languages and dialects. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the population grew and six main colonies were formed. In 1901, those six colonies federated and created what we know today as the Commonwealth of Australia. Today, Australia is the sixth largest country in the world with the twelfth largest economy.
